Pieta Brown & The Taken (ft. S.Carey & Mike Lewis)

Portrait of Pieta Brown in a light-colored blouse, posed against a layered, abstract background in muted green, brown, and gold tones.

A true treasure in today’s wide world of indie music, Pieta Brown brings a beautifully singular flair to everything she does. Her magnetic new album, Dreamin’ Of, serves as sublime sonic proof. Set against painterly arrangements designed to support Pieta’s captivating vocals and razor-love storytelling, the album functions as a cinematic song cycle that unapologetically addresses timeless themes of nature, love, loss, and resilience.

Hailed by the BBC as a “self-styled poetess, folk goddess, and country waif,” Pieta first rose to international prominence with her 2002 debut, relentlessly expanding her artistic footprint ever since. Her work has earned widespread acclaim - from The New York Times, NPR Music, Stereogum, and Billboard and beyond; while also garnering the deep respect of legendary mentors and peers across the industry. Along with touring and collaborating with icons like John Prine, Mavis Staples, and Ani DiFranco, she further established her production credentials by co-producing Iris DeMent's recent album, Workin’ On A World. Her singular vision also won the admiration of Justin Vernon, who one called Pieta's Paradise Outlaw his "favorite album ever recorded" at the Bon Iver studio.

Recorded at two Midwestern outposts, including April Base, Dreamin’ Of was produced by Pieta alongside Bon Iver cohorts Sean Carey and Mike Lewis. The album boasts a charged communal chemistry, featuring masterful contributions from Amos Lee, Bo Ramsey, and Jeremy Ylvisaker. Born from an unconventional childhood split between rural Iowa landscapes and the deep south, Pieta’s music carries a groove-heavy, slow-burn firepower that twists, turns, and surprises. On stage and on record, hers is the voice of an artist unafraid to get close to the source.
